Climate leadership Development is a micro-credential created in collaboration with Ireland’s Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate and Community Action (IKC3), as part of the life-long learning programme.
This micro-credential is designed to be an upskill opportunity for public sector and private enterprise professionals in the areas of Climate Leadership and sustainability, and takes place over a 3-month period (updated from previously listed timeframe).
There are currently two intakes per year; one in September and one in March.
Climate Leadership Development Micro-credential 2025 - OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS!
Do you want to participate in a part-time, fully online Climate Leadership Development micro-credential which will enhance your career and become a leader in the fight against climate change?
You can develop your leadership skills at both an individual and organisational level with the Climate Leadership Development Micro-Credential from Trinity Micro-credentials. Learners will have an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals, and to collaborate with other professionals from across a range of sectors. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with a cohort of leaders committed to driving climate action, participate in group coaching and develop a professional climate action plan.
This micro-credential deals with development of climate leadership skills and it will cover the following areas:
- Climate Change as a Systemic Challenge – addresses implementation challenges, the need for building climate capacity, developing multidisciplinary teams, and the need for systems thinking embedded in cross-organisational collaboration.
- Principles of Climate Leadership - we will explore the importance of integrating principles of ethics into climate leadership.
- Integrating Climate and Biodiversity into Decision Making - Why do we need to integrate climate and biodiversity into decision making and how can we do this? How are biodiversity and climate challenges interconnected? How can we address these challenges in an integrated way?
- Driving behavioural change – understanding human perception from the perspective of individuals, organisations, and society. How to communicate effectively both within your organisation and in your organisation’s wider sphere of impact to drive climate action.
- Policy making for Climate Action – understanding how policy is developed and what the current and possible future responsibilities are for public and private sectors.
- Curating your Climate Leadership Journey – we will explore principles and practice to create your own Climate Leadership journey.
How will this Micro-credential be delivered?
The micro-credential will be delivered fully online, during normal working hours.
The Micro-credential will include:
• Monthly webinars will address key areas of climate leadership development
• Separate check-in sessions with coaches are designed to assist with the monthly content and to support your professional development.
• Two mandatory in-person networking summits will take place at the start and end of the course duration.

The course will take place online every Wednesday lunchtime period 12pm-2pm starting from Wednesday 3rd September to Wednesday 26th November over three months starting with an information session on the 27th August - there will be mandatary in-person networking summit at the start and end of the course - dates to be confirmed – please see the draft micro-credential timetable below:

Assessment:
Group Presentation 30%:
The group project presentation is designed for you to demonstrate how you would apply systems thinking to overcome climate risks, and to demonstrate leadership by showcasing your climate mitigation and adaptation solutions. The presentation is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your group's impact leadership approach.
Group Report 30%:
As part of your group submission, you are required to provide a group reflective report. Your report should be approximately 2000-2500 words. Your group reflective report should clearly outline why you decided to take the strategic climate leadership approach that you outlined in your presentation.
Group reflective report: You have given your presentation to the board. The board now require you to submit a report that outlines your leadership team's rationale for taking the strategic approach that you outlined in your presentation. Your report should include reference to the latest data, research, and practice. This report can be structured in any format that you think is appropriate to best convey your why, how, and what.
Personal Action Plan 40%:
This personal action plan is designed for you to identify challenges, barriers, and opportunities for your organisation and to develop actionable goals to deliver climate action. The action plan is structured around the learning for each theme. The word count is 1500 words.
We will also have two in-person networking session close to the start and at the end of the course, these are not assessed, but an excellent opportunity to meet up with your fellow learners and collaborate on ideas, your action plan and share recommendations and support for each other.
NFQ Level 9 Accreditation
Commencing in September 2025 - Part-Time, Online over 3-months
Applicants must have a minimum 2.2 grade in a level 8 degree or applicants without a level 8 degree may apply through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) route. Further information on RPL can be found at here .

Presented by our IKC3 CLD MC Course Director Professor Quentin Crowley, this session will briefly offer an introduction and explore systems thinking models such as the Iceberg Model Mapping System Events model, understanding hierarchical systems, and the application of systems thinking to your challenge areas. There will be time for Q&A at the end, with an overview on the application and registration procedure explained.

This is a great opportunity to meet a panel drawn from our current cohort of course participants who will discuss their experience of the course as a learner, course impact, learning expectations, management of the course duties/time with their daily life, how to incorporate leadership skills to their life work/situation going forward, and share their own special highlights and recommendations. Each panellist will talk for five minutes and there will be time for Q&A at the end.

Participating in the Climate Leadership Micro-credential was a transformative experience that expanded my understanding of key topics relating to climate change.
