Two Fully Funded PhD Opportunities – JUDGEASSIST, Trinity College Dublin
Join JUDGEASSIST, a major European Research Council-funded research programme investigating how AI systems for assisting judicial decision-making can be designed, evaluated, and deployed in ways that enhance, rather than undermine, the integrity and legitimacy of judicial systems, consistent with European rule of law values.
We invite applications for two full-time, fully funded PhD positions starting 1 September 2026.
The PhD in Law suits excellent applicants with a background in law and interest, expertise or research experience at the intersection of AI, judicial systems, and the rule of law.

The PhD in Social Sciences suits excellent applicants with expertise in social sciences; particularly from psychology, behavioural science, behavioural economics and crossover degrees combining social law with social sciences, along with other disciplines where social sciences methods such as controlled experimental studies are regularly used. This role is suited to those skilled in experimental or empirical research and interested in trust in AI, technology acceptance, and human-AI interaction in judicial contexts.

Both positions will be based out at the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin, and supervised by the Principal Investigator, Dr Brian Barry.
Both offer a tax free stipend of €25,000 per year, EU‑level fee coverage, research funding, and integration into a vibrant interdisciplinary team shaping the future of AI in justice.
