Students can study abroad in their third (Junior Sophister) year for a semester or for the full year, as part of the Law School Exchange Programme. Students can choose from a wide range of prestigious universities across Europe, North America, Australia and the Far East, depending on their Law degree programme.

Overview Outbound

Single Honours Law students have two options:

  1. Apply for European Erasmus and Non-European exchanges of the Law School (see Partner Universities tab), or
  1. Apply for College-wide International exchange via the Global Mobility Office to Australian National University (Canberra), the University of Queensland, University of New South Wales, University of Stellenbosch, City University of Hong Kong, and Singapore Management University. More details can be found here

Joint Honours Law with Language students:

Law and French and German students are only eligible to study in France or Germany. For the list of universities available please refer to the Partner Universities tab.

Joint Honours Law with Business, Political Science or History students:

Students following the Law Major pathway for their degree must choose in their third year the Law Major, Subject 2 Minor, Option B pathway. TJH Law students can apply to the Law School / Partner Discipline or the College-wide International Exchange programmes to study abroad. Full details on partner universities available to TJH students can be found in the Law School Exchange Programme Handbook available on the Blackboard module LAU1000 - UNDERGRADUATE INFORMATION

As this is an exchange programme, tuition fees at the host institution are waived. Students pay their normal TCD fees and will also receive any of their usual grants (plus a SUSI top-up if relevant). Students attending an EU institution will also be eligible to receive Erasmus+ funding (this varies every year and depends on the destination). Students attending non-EU partners may apply for the TCD Global Mobility Bursary. Please note that these grants are paid after you commence your studies abroad. For questions about the grant, please contact Global.Mobility@tcd.ie

To be eligible to apply for the exchange programme, you must have attained a minimum overall grade of 50% in your first-year results. This minimum II.2 grade must be maintained in your second year in order to study abroad in your third year. For North American institutions, Hong Kong University, and the University of Zurich, students must have attained an overall grade of 60% in both your first year and second year exams. These requirements do not apply to Law and Language students as the year abroad is a compulsory component of the degree programme.

The Law School allocates places using a competitive selection process. Applicants are ranked in order of their first-year results and offered the highest of their preferences that is available to them. While there are limited places available in each institution, most students who apply will be given an offer to study abroad.

As the Junior Sophister year will make up 30% of your final degree grade, students will need to work hard while abroad. Our partner universities have very high standards, and the results which you attain abroad will count for a proportion of your final degree.

Before applying, please carefully read the Law School Exchange Programme Handbook 2026/27 which is available in the Blackboard module LAU1000 - UNDERGRADUATE INFORMATION.

To apply for a place in the Law School Exchange Programme, you must complete the Global Mobility online application form

If you wish to also apply for a place on the College-wide International Exchange Programme, you must submit a second, separate, application form.

For TJH students, you can also apply for a place in your partner discipline exchange programme, but you must make sure that you can study both Law and your second discipline in their partner universities. You will need to submit a third application form if you wish to apply through your partner discipline.
