Overview of Programmes
The Joint Honours programme in Law provides students with a rigorous foundation in legal studies while allowing them to explore a complementary discipline, Business, History, Political Science, French, or German. This interdisciplinary degree is ideal for students with broad academic interests who wish to understand how law interacts with different spheres of society, governance, and culture.
Through the study of Law, students gain a critical understanding of legal principles, institutions, and frameworks. At the same time, the second subject offers a deeper contextual lens, be it the political systems that shape legal reform, the historical roots of legal traditions, the commercial environments regulated by law, or the linguistic and cultural fluency needed in an increasingly globalised legal landscape.
The programme is carefully structured to accommodate students intending to pursue a professional legal qualification. While Joint Honours students take fewer law modules than those on single honours law programmes, they still have access to the core subjects required for entry to the legal professional bodies in Ireland.
This degree is particularly well-suited to independent, intellectually curious students who are keen to explore the intersection of legal thinking with another academic discipline. It also offers the flexibility to tailor your studies to evolving interests, while opening pathways to a wide range of careers, both within and beyond the legal profession.

Course Structure
What Law modules will I study on the Joint Honors Programme in Law?
In the first and second years, you will study a variety of foundational and professional law modules, taken alongside students reading for our single honors law programme. You will take less law modules than a single Honors student will take. The modules available to you will be be determined by the Pathway and award (see above) you wish to pursue from your SF year onwards. Your third and fourth years will be spent taking advanced modules in Law and/or your other subject. If you are taking French or German, you must spend your penultimate year in a university in France or Germany. Please see the individual combination entries listed above/below for more details.
