Most research activities will not require additional review or intervention. Research security considerations are more likely to arise where research involves international collaboration, dual-use considerations, defence-related funding, or the international transfer of technology, data, software, or expertise.

Not in most cases. International collaboration is fundamental to Trinity’s research mission. The aim is to identify specific risks where they arise and apply proportionate safeguards, while preserving openness, academic freedom and international engagement.

Dual-use research refers to civilian research that may also have potential security or defence applications. The existence of dual-use potential does not mean that research is high risk or that it should be regarded as defence research.

No. Dual-use research refers to civilian research with possible security or defence applications. Defence research is a more specific category and generally refers to research funded, commissioned, or directed for military or defence purposes.

Not necessarily. Research in these areas is typically undertaken for legitimate civilian purposes. However, some projects may raise research security, dual-use, or export control considerations depending on the specific research and collaboration context.

Export controls are legal measures that regulate the transfer of certain goods, technologies, software, technical information, and expertise, including some intangible transfers associated with research and collaboration.

No. Researchers are not expected to navigate research security, dual-use, defence research, or export control issues independently. Guidance and support are available through the Knowledge Security function.
