Trinity College Dublin today marked the official in-person launch of its ground-breaking Trinity Water Centre at a vibrant event held in Tangent @ Portal. The launch brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from all three faculties within the university, as well as Provost Dr Linda Doyle and Dean of Research Professor Sinead Ryan, signifying the institution's commitment to this critical area of research.
The Trinity Water Centre stands as a pioneering hub dedicated to advancing research, fostering innovation, and delivering comprehensive education in all aspects of water. With a clear focus on addressing pressing global water challenges, the Centre aims to inform sustainable resource management practices and drive significant technological advancements in the field.
Provost Dr Linda Doyle, in her opening remarks, eloquently underscored the intricate and far-reaching nature of water, both as a subject of rigorous academic inquiry and as an indispensable element of our daily existence. She emphasized the inherently interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary nature of the research endeavours that will be undertaken within the newly established Centre, highlighting the collaborative spirit that will drive its success.
Dr Muhammad Ali, the Director of the Trinity Water Centre, articulated the urgency and significance of the Centre's mission. "Water is undeniably one of the most pressing global challenges of our time," he stated. "The Trinity Water Centre is poised to play a crucial role in pioneering new approaches to safeguard this vital resource. Through cutting-edge research, impactful education initiatives, and strategic partnerships, our ambition is to drive advancements in water that will yield lasting benefits for communities and ecosystems worldwide."
Following the insightful opening talks, attendees engaged in a dynamic panel session expertly chaired by Professor John Gallagher. The panel delved into the interconnected and urgent challenges facing water specifically within the Irish context. The session featured a wealth of expertise and diverse perspectives from esteemed guests representing key organizations in the Irish water sector, including An Taisce, Glanua, Water Share Ireland, The Water Forum - An Fóram Uisce, Uisce Éireann Irish Water, and RPS. The lively discussion underscored the multifaceted nature of water-related issues and the critical need for collaborative solutions.
