Trinity College Dublin and the ADAPT Research Centre have won Research Ireland’s Defence Innovation Challenge with Sea‑Scan, an AI‑enhanced system designed to boost Ireland’s maritime security. Developed by a team led by Prof. Marco Ruffini and Dr John Kennedy in collaboration with the Defence Forces, Sea‑Scan uses subsea fibre‑optic infrastructure to detect and monitor vessel activity — including “dark” ships that disable tracking systems.
