Research Ireland and Embassy of France in Ireland announce 15 new Franco-Irish research partnerships under the Ulysses programme is a powerful reminder of what sustained international collaboration can achieve.

Led by Research Ireland in partnership with the Embassy of France in Ireland and key French ministries, Ulysses continues to strengthen deep, durable and dynamic ties between Ireland and France. Now in its 29th year, the programme has supported more than 700 researchers, enabling early-stage mobility that helps teams test ideas, share methodologies and build the foundations for long-term European collaboration.

Among this year’s awardees, E3 is particularly delighted to see Trinity College Dublin and Université Paris-Saclay (ENS Paris-Saclay) collaborating on a project of strategic importance to the energy transition.

Congratulations to Breffni Fitzgerald, School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, and Ludovic Chamoin of Université Paris-Saclay (ENS Paris-Saclay) on their Ulysses award for:

“Goal-Oriented Model Reduction for Real-Time Control of Nonlinear Wind Farm Systems.”

As Ireland and France accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, the ability to model and control complex wind farm systems in real time is critical. This collaboration sits at the intersection of advanced computational science, engineering innovation and sustainable energy policy. By developing efficient, goal-oriented model reduction techniques, the team aims to enable smarter, more resilient wind energy systems , supporting national and European climate objectives.

Their partnership reflects the broader ambition of Ulysses: to spark collaboration across science, technology, culture and public policy. With strategic co-funding from organisations such as EirGrid, RTE-France, SEAI and ADEME, this year’s programme also reinforces shared priorities in sustainability, energy security and environmental innovation.

Programmes like Ulysses demonstrate that research diplomacy matters. When institutions like Trinity and Université Paris-Saclay work together, they do more than advance knowledge, they strengthen European cooperation, build trusted networks and help shape solutions to common societal challenges.

Congratulations again to Breffni and Ludovic, and to all 2026 Ulysses awardees. The future of sustainable energy , and of European research collaboration, is brighter because of partnerships like these.
