Doctorate in Dental Surgery (Dental Public Health)

Full-Time (3 years) Part-Time (5 years)

The Doctorate level course has been designed to support the development of an experienced dentist into a dental leader and role model capable of managing a large complex regional or national dental service, or acting as a consultant to provide health service reviews, and to encourage the development of patient centred evidence based, efficient oral health services.

Areas covered include:

  • Undertaking a needs assessment in dentistry
  • Undertaking a health equity audit of a public health service
  • Developing an oral health strategy
  • Evaluating an oral health service
  • Developing an oral health promotion programme
  • Becoming competent at using information technology to gather, analyse and present dental public health data
  • Using dental serve quality indicators to protect the public from risk associated with the delivery of dentistry
  • Undertaking a Dental Public Health research project
  • Appraising existing research
  • Learning how to teach dental public health at a specialist level

The degree programme is divided into taught courses with a significant component of the course working with national health providers (including the Irish Health Service Executive and/or the UK National Health Service). A major dissertation is undertaken during the course.
