Research Expertise
I am a recognised expert in two main areas: the literature of early modern England and Global Shakespeare. My research examines how interactions with other countries, cultures, and languages influenced early modern England's literary culture and how early modern literature has travelled into new contexts worldwide. My monograph, Foreign Tongues in Early Modern English Drama, which I am currently completing and plan to submit to Palgrave Macmillan, develops a new method of reading the multilingual dimensions of early modern English drama and of the disruptive potential of the foreign language elements on English dramatic texts. Two chapters drawn from this project have appeared in cutting-edge collections published by Palgrave and Bloomsbury. I have also established a reputation in the field of Global Shakespeare. Drawing on my fluency in multiple foreign languages, I explore the politics of adaptation in Shakespearean theatrical and cinematic productions worldwide. I have published a number of journal articles, focusing especially on the political significance of Shakespeare adaptations in East-Central Europe and the Middle East. I am the co-editor of an innovative essay collection Performing Global Identities through Shakespeare on Stage and Screen, which is under consideration at Edinburgh University Press. Since 2018, I have served as Associate Editor of the Palgrave Encyclopaedia of Global Shakespeare, a groundbreaking reference work already available in electronic format and due for print publication in 2029. I recently collaborated with Dr James Robert Wood from University of East Anglia on an edition of the collected writings of Jermyn Pratt, a Norfolk clergyman, most of whose work had previously been available only in manuscript. The project included a Zoom premiere of Pratt's comedy The Grange. Work for this project drew on my interest in the representation of dialects and in the influence of early modern literature on the literature of later periods.
