Name: Julia Schroer
Degree/Masters: Graduated in 2008 with a BA (Mod) Business Studies and Sociology

What are you doing with yourself these days?
These days, I am serving as a Community Economic Development Agent with the American organization Peace Corps, in Senegal, West Africa.

Why did you choose your current career?
After living in 5 different countries in 5 years and having several different work experiences, I knew in my next job I wanted to learn about international development and to begin developing a career in the field. I also love any opportunity to learn a new language, live in a new country, and learn about another culture. The Peace Corps offered a perfect combination of these interests in a professional setting.

How do you like to spend your free time?
Working in a developing country is rewarding, but not very fast paced, so I have a lot of free time these days! I enjoy reading non-fiction novels about people who had amazing lives. I also drink copious amounts of tea, which is particularly enjoyed in the company of good friends. I like to exercise; in school I was a competitive rower, but these days I love hot yoga and jogging. I’ve run a half-marathon and I’m interested in training for a full marathon.

Are you still in touch with other alumni?
Almost every day!

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
Living in Ireland and working in International Development requiring regular travel to oversee projects with our partner organizations.

Have you any advice for students or fellow alumni?

Don’t be worried about knowing exactly what you’re going to do for the rest of your life at 21 or 22 years old. You've got a long life to live and there are lots of things to see and do! A career will evolve as you follow your passions.
