Student FAQs
Your lecturer may decided to record a lecture and upload it to Blackboard so that students on the module can view the recording as a study aid.
If your lecturer has told you that a lecture recording or lecture summary is available, this can be accessed via Blackboard within the relevant module. Pre-recorded lecture material will typically be viewable as Panopto videos, although this may vary by module. You can learn about the different features available in the Panopto viewer by visiting the Panopto Viewer Guide.
Personal data, as defined by the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person ('data subject’).
An identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person.
Images and voices collected during recordings of lectures are considered as personal data and are processed by the University according to the GDPR - see Student Privacy Notice for information on how and why Trinity processes student personal data. Trinity, as a data controller, is entrusted to safeguard personal data under GDPR.
Further information on individuals’ rights under the legislation and responsibilities for Trinity can be found on the Trinity Data Protection website or from the Data Protection Officer dataprotection@tcd.ie
Lecture recordings or lecture summaries are a valuable resource for student learning in addition to student attendance at in-person lectures. They can be accessed by you as a revision aid, for example, or to review complex material.
Lecture recordings or lecture summaries complement, but do not replace, attendance at and active participation in lectures. Lecture recordings or lecture summaries are made available exclusively for internal use within Trinity, and are accessible to registered students only from within the VLE (Blackboard Ultra). They may not be shared, distributed, or accessed outside this context. Students are expressly prohibited from unauthorised sharing, publishing or uploading to third party sites or messaging apps (e.g. Snapchat, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram etc.) of images or content processed during recorded teaching sessions, including personal data of staff and fellow students. To do so is a breach of Intellectual Property and Data Protection legislation and will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the University's disciplinary procedures.
