George Browne

1695 – 1699 (C. 1649-99)

George Browne was a native of Northumberland who had been educated in the College, elected to Fellowship in 1673 and appointed Professor of Divinity in 1693.1 He continued to hold this chair during his provostship, which began on 22 July 1695 and came to an untimely end on Trinity Sunday, 1699. His death was due in part to an injury he had received the previous year. He had gone with his Senior Fellows to the Hall to deliver a public admonition to some students when a riot broke out and he was hit by a brickbat.
