Food, Culture and Identity in Early Modern Ireland: An Interdisciplinary Approach

A seminar by Dr Susan Flavin & Dr Charlie Taverner (TCD), Dr Meriel McClatchie (UCD), Dr Alice Rose (University of York), Dr Fiona Beglane (ATU Sligo), Dr Julie Dunne (University of Bristol) as part of the Trinity Centre for Early Modern History Seminar Series.

This seminar brings a slightly different format to the series. The session will introduce and share results from the ERC FoodCult project, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to food and drink history in Ireland. After an overview, members of the team will present short papers on their work. We will conclude with brief comments on the challenges and opportunities of working together. The seminar will be slightly longer in duration with papers until 5.30 pm followed by discussion/Q&A until 6 pm. For details on the project see foodcult.eu

  • Charlie Taverner (TCD/History): Using household accounts as evidence of food consumption
  • Meriel McClatchie (UCD/Archaeobotany): Archaeology, Archaeobotany and Cereals in Early Modern Ireland
  • Fiona Beglane (ATU Sligo/Zooarchaeology): Meat and dairy in early modern Ireland
  • Julie Dunne (University of Bristol/Organic Geochemistry): Organic residue analysis of pottery in Ireland 1550-1650
  • Alice Rose & Janet Montgomery (Durham University- Archaeology): Identifying foodways in early modern Ireland using a multi-isotope approach

 This seminar will be chaired by Dr Christopher Kissane.

The Trinity Centre for Early Modern History promotes an understanding of the culture, society, economy, religion, politics and warfare of early modern Europe. The Centre organises seminars, conferences and public lectures on the early modern history of Ireland, Britain and Continental Europe, as well as on relations between European and non-European states and cultures.
