The Cuala Press: art, craft, innovation
Our Seminar Series resumes on Wednesday, 31 January, 4.30-6pm, when Angela Griffith [Text and Image], Billy Shortall, and Stephen Lawlor discuss the Cuala Press.
The Cuala Press (1908-1940) was a world renowned private press, one that celebrated Irish materials and skills. Under the stewardship of Elizabeth C. Yeats, who was inspired by the international Arts and Crafts Movement, Cuala produced finely made hand printed books, illustrated broadsheets and original hand coloured prints. This panel explores the artistry of Cuala's work and the themes they addressed. The Press will be positioned within the wider contexts of the period, a time of significant political, social and cultural change in Ireland, marked not least by the growing agency of women.
Artist Stephen Lawlor will present on a contemporary project, ‘Kwaidan’, that connects fine art with literature and what such engagements offer artists.
Kwaidan—Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn is an exhibition of prints by 20 Japanese and 20 Irish-based artists consisting of a sumptuous array of visual interpretations of Kwaidan, the well-known book of ghost stories published in 1904 by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), also known as Koizumi Yakumo.
All are welcome, no registration required.
