Dr. Louise Daly
Associate Professor, School of Nursing & Midwifery
Biography
Dr Louise Daly is an Associate Professor in Ageing and Community Nursing and current Head of Discipline for General Nursing (second term), Trinity College Dublin where she has been employed since 2004. She qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1993, a Registered Nurse Tutor in 1999, and in 2010 she obtained her PhD from Trinity College Dublin. Her clinical, education and research interests are in care of the older adult, with a particular interest in dementia care. Louise teaches and supervises in these and other areas across undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School, including on the interdisciplinary online Postgraduate Certificate and blended Masters in Dementia. As part of various research teams within the department, she has worked on research studies that have attracted more than 1,128,000 Euros in research funding. She has a particular interest in qualitative/interpretive, evaluation and meta-synthesis systematic review research methodologies. She is a member of the organising committees of and facilitates two Alzheimer Cafés, and she is a member of the steering and advisory committees' of the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre. Louise serves as a member of the editorial boards of Dementia: The International Journal of Social Research and Practice journal and the International Journal of Older Person Nursing.

Research Expertise
Description
The key foci of my research include: 1.Dementia care (major focus), 2.Care of the older person (major focus), 3.Ethics in practice 4.Supporting sexuality and spirituality in later life. I have an established national profile in dementia and later life care recognised by my peers, health service colleagues and researchers. While my early research related to understanding experiences of service users, families and professionals in these areas, my research has evolved to focus on developing, implementing and evaluating related innovations in care. I aim to engage in research across the continuum of care that generates evidence to inform service transformation to enhance person oriented quality care supporting health and well-being. As my profile evidences, my research primarily fits both within the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI), within which I am a Principal Investigator for the postdoctoral researcher contract with one of the linked sites, and also the TCD Ageing Research theme. I have a particular strength in collaborative research team working and am continuously asked to join research teams for my: research foci, ability to lead, manage and complete project work packages to deadline, and for support in relation to the ethics and pragmatic feasibility of studies. My experience includes postdoctoral and research assistant supervision. To date, I have been successful in securing funding of over 1,128,000 as Co-applicant or Principal Investigator. The research I conduct is funded and unfunded. A number of the unfunded projects are pro bono with clinical colleagues and are consistent with the TCPHI model of building research capacity within nursing colleagues to impact on health systems and service delivery. I have research skills across a diversity of research paradigms and methodologies with particular expertise in interpretive approaches e.g. grounded theory, and in qualitative systematic review and mixed method evaluation research. I am trained in Joanna Briggs Institute systematic reviews. My research experience informs my research supervision activities.Projects

- The aim of the study is to The study objectives are: To conduct a qualitative exploration of nurses within experiences of communicating and supporting patients and family communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. To produce a research report that includes the identification of recommendations derived from the study findings that can be used to enhance preparedness, policy and practice to support communication with and between patient and family with particular emphasis on communication in the context of a pandemic/public health emergency. Within these are social distancing, community restrictions, cocooning of at risk populations and a health system which has reorientated to accommodate mass testing and increasing acute care capacity. In May, a survey by Family Carers Ireland identified additional stresses such as heightened caregiver anxiety, delays or cancellations of care and a fear of getting Covid 19 and being unable to continue caregiving. This study will use build on the survey using caregivers voices about experiences of care during the pandemic.

- The aims of this mixed method evaluation was to: 1. measure the activities & impact (direct and indirect) of a critical mass of ANPs to five service areas: rheumatology, respiratory medicine, older persons care and unscheduled care ED & AMAU, 2. Evaluate the impact of this critical mass on service challenges of access to services, 3.Capture the perspective and experiences of patients and their families; the interdisciplinary teams; the health service organisation and the health system effect of implementation of the critical mass of ANPs, 3. Provide an analysis of the challenges and opportunities arising from this initiative, 4. Assess the economic effectiveness/contribution of the ANP policy and 5. Make recommendations for service, practice and implementation for continuing the rollout of a critical mass of ANP's. This mixed method evaluation is informed by Participatory Evidence-Informed Patient-Centred Process for ANP Role Development (PEPPA) (Bryant-Lukosius & DiCenso, 2004, Bryant-Lukosius et al. 2017).

- Improving Practice Led Research for the Benefit of Service Users; Research Capacity Building for Nursing - HSE Project 10200
- Summary
- The aim of this research project is to build research capacity (RCD) and enhance professional practice, healthcare and patient outcomes through the development of an enabling research infrastructure for nurse led research and innovation in collaboration with Community Health care Organisation 7. The intervention in this project builds upon the success reported by McKee et al. (2017) and a number of research capacity building collaborations with Dublin Midlands hospitals associated with CHO 7. A key activity for the post-doctoral researcher will be to provide support for nurses in the clinical area to do research and thus provide part of the formal infrastructure to foster RCD. The post-doctoral researcher will initially manage the five research projects identified in the tender document. Research projects will be developed in collaboration with CHO7 Directors of Public Health Nursing and Public Health Nurses. To assist in the process an initial consultation was held with PHN's in CHO7. The linked project I am currently involved in is a systematic review exploring community nurses' attitudes, knowledge and educational needs in relation to urinary continence, continence assessment, and management: The research project team on this study also includes Dr Margaret McCann, Ms Anne-Marie Kelly CHO7, Ms Jessica Eustace-Cook TCD Librarianand Dr Claire Howlin.

- Evaluation of Genio Dementia Programme
- Summary
- This mult-site study evaluated integrated care for Persons with Dementia in 3 hospital and 2 community care sites. I was the Principal Investigator for one of the three hospital site evaluations. (approximate proportion of budget evaluation 1/6 overall budget). The aims of the hospital evaluation component of the overall project were to 1. Understand how integrated care pathways can change and improve service delivery and outcome for people living with dementia and their families and 2. Explore the roll-out of integrated care pathways and alignment with implementation of the National Dementia Strategy (Department of Health 2014). The hospital project evaluations examined each project's processes as well as it outcomes, looking at four key aspects: audit (organisational, ward and environmental), economic analysis, evaluation of education and awareness raising initiatives and evaluation of experience of dementia care services.

- The Alzheimer Society of Ireland commissioned this exploratory research,to better understand this issue and gain insight into how to respond to dementia related stigma in an Irish context.A qualitative exploratory approach using grounded theory methods guided the conduct of the study. The research included a critical review of the literature to identify the existing knowledge base relating to stigma and dementia related stigma. The findings were integrated under nine themes and represent a preliminary exploration of stigma in dementia from the perspective of those interviewed. - The Experience of Spirituality from the Perspective of the Person with Dementia
- Summary
- This meta-synthesis considered the experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people living with a diagnosis of dementia. A total of 667 papers were initially identified. However, following careful quality review assessment a final eight papers were selected. Findings demonstrated the ongoing importance of spirituality to people living with dementia and its importance as a means of finding hope, meaning and linkage with past, present and future. Expression of spirituality through faith practices, contact with faith communities, and the impact of dementia on these, were also highlighted.

- Sustaining Place - How Informal Carers of Persons with Dementia Address the Problem of 'Living on the Fringes'
- Summary
- PhD Research and Thesis. The aim of this study was to develop a theory to explain the processes employed by informal carers of persons with dementia to resolve issues of primary concern to them. The study was conducted using a Classic Grounded Theory (CGT) approach and a social constructionist orientation informed the conceptualisation of the resultant theory. The problem of concern to informal carers in this study was identified as 'Living on the fringes'. This problem refers to a significant and frequently negative alteration to informal carers' relationships with and place within their life-worlds. The theory of 'Sustaining Place' represents the social pattern of activities informal carers engage in to address this problem and has four components: 1) 'Unsettled place', 2) 'Threatened place', 3) 'Sustaining our place' and 4) 'Sustained Place'. the theory is dynamic and can occur in relation to sequences of 'Sustaining Place'. The theory therefore represents the diverse and individual nature of an informal carer's experience of living with dementia.
