Naas General Hospital collaboration with TCPHI

History of collaboration

In 2016, a partnership research capacity building program was established between Naas General Hospital and the Trinity Centre for Practice & Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI), School of Nursing and Midwifery. A steering committee meets regularly to oversee the collaboration. Members include, the Director of Nursing, a representative from Nursing Practice Development, along with the TCPHI Research Fellow and Co-Principal Investigators Dr Margaret McCann and Dr Louise Daly.

Funder

Currently, this partnership is being funded by the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit (NMPDU), Dublin South, Kildare and Wicklow.

Healthcare researcher

The primary aim of the role of the researcher is to support and advance TCPHI-NGH collaborative research with the purpose of developing high-quality nurse-led research that improves practice and patient care.

Naas General Hospital

  • Title: Keeping patients healthy at home. The impact of unscheduled nurse-led virtual care on patients and healthcare outcomes
  • Description: The aim of this project is to examine the impact of unscheduled nurse-led virtual care to patients in an outpatient's setting.
  • Collaborators: Dr Margaret McCann, Prof Catherine McCabe, Ms Elaine Harris, Ms Joanne Begley, Ms Jackie McGrath and Mr David Connolly.
  • Title: The role of the Stroke ANP
  • Description:  A paper to quantify the role of the ANP and impact on patient treatment and management and to reflect on the current challenges in sustaining the ANP role in practice and make recommendations for the future.
  • Collaborators: Patricia Daly, Sharon O’Donnell, Patricia White.
  • Title: Assessing the level of depression in patients with chronic illness
  • Description: A cross-departmental assessment of depression in patients with chronic illness (respiratory, cardiac, rheumatology, stroke, dermatology and diabetes).

  • Title: Impact of COVID-19 on nurses' experiences of communicating with and supporting patients and family/informal carers communication: A qualitative exploration
  • Description: The aim of this project is to explore nurses' experiences of communicating with and supporting patients' and family/informal carers' communication during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Collaborators: Dr Louise Daly, Dr Frances O'Brien, Ms Elaine Harris, Ms Ancy Mary Anthony, Ms Fiona Grogan and Mr David Connolly.
  • Title: Developing the Red Legs RATED Tool (Rapid Assessment & Treatment in the Emergency Department) in Naas General Hospital
  • Description: This study involves conducting a retrospective chart review, the development and use of a red legs care pathway and a prospective chart review. It will also include a service user and service provider satisfaction survey.
  • Collaborators:  Gillian O’Brien, Ann Marie Tobin, A Salim, Emmanuel Eguare , Patricia Cronin (advisory capacity), Patricia White.
  • Title: COPDisc Naas Project: Improving discharge care for COPD patients
  • Description: A multi-phase study to review patients who are re-admitted after an unplanned admission for treatment of a COPD exacerbation. The first phase involves conducting an international eDelphi study to identify factors for a review of 90 day readmissions following an initial unplanned admission for treatment of a COPD exacerbation.
  • Collaborators: Fiona Kavanagh, Catherine Callan, Tariq Quadri, Amani EL Gammal, Geralyn Hynes, Patricia White.
  • Title: Nurses' preparedness for end of life conversations. Exploring nurses' experiences and needs when communicating with patients with non-malignant life-limiting illnesses in an acute hospital care setting
  • Description: This was a mixed methods study to explore the current experiences and needs of nurses in an acute hospital setting when communicating with patients with non-malignant life-limiting illnesses around end of life care.
  • Collaborators: Eilish Duignan, Anne Marie Maguire, Elaine Harris, Dr Patricia White, Kathleen Neenan & Dr Louise Daly.
  • Title: Capturing nurses practices in delivering planned virtual clinics to their patients in Naas General Hospital pre and post COVID-19
  • Description: The aim of this study was to investigate practices and processes in delivering planned virtual clinics in Naas General Hospital. It involved an audit of clinic data, analysis of relevant documents, a patient satisfaction survey and a focus group exploring nurses' experiences of developing and delivering virtual clinics in Naas General Hospital.
  • Collaborators: Joanna Rea, Marian Hayden, Elaine Harris, Dr Patricia White, Professor Catherine McCabe & Dr Margaret McCann.
  • Title: Establishing Enhanced Care in Naas: An Appreciative Inquiry
  • Description: Using a mixed methods approach including audits, documentary analysis and the World Café methodology, this study developed an action plan in relation to enhanced care for patients in Naas General Hospital.
  • Collaborators: Antoinette Fenlon-Carroll, Anne Murphy, Elaine Harris, Dr Louise Daly (TCD), Dr Patricia White (TCPHI).

  • Title:  An evaluation of the impact on services and perception of colleagues on the introduction of Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department
  • Description: Retrospective audit of patient records and survey of staff to evaluate the impact of the introduction of an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department.
  • Collaborators:  Eimear Lavelle, Caroline O’Neill, Catherine McCabe, Amanda Roberts.
  • Title: Observation of mealtime assistance at breakfast: a cross hospital project Nutrition/Hydration Cross Hospital Project encompassing Naas General Hospital, St. James Hospital and Tallaght Hospital.
  • Description: This project evaluated the practice of mealtime assistance at breakfast in a sample of patients across three ward types in three acute hospitals and if appropriate, identify possible quality improvement initiatives.

  • Description: A survey based evaluation of patients’ experience of attending the Nurse Chest Pain Clinics in Naas General Hospital and Tallaght Hospital
