The university is not a perfect place – like the Church – but there is no better place to foster religious understanding among the youth, through ecumenical dialogue and between faith and culture. Promoting social justice and to fostering ethical values in society on the basis of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the midst of the changing face of religion is a call that cannot be outsourced entirely to ecclesiastical institutions whose primary function is to train for the priesthood and ministry. We find ourselves in a moment when it is even less clear than before what are universities for. Paradoxically, this moment of uncertainty helps us understand better what university theology is for.
