2022-2023 TY Modern Languages Poster Prize winners announced.

The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, TCD, held a special event on Tuesday 18th April to present prizes to the winners of the Trinity College TY Modern Languages poster competition, organised by Ms Tracy Corbett  and Dr Rachel Hoare on behalf of the School.

More than 100 transition year groups around the country entered the competition which called on students to answer why they would love to be fluent in a certain language. Students were asked to use their “creative and critical thinking” to design a creative poster explaining their passion for a foreign language. Projects in Arabic, French, German, Irish, Italian, Turkish and Spanish were submitted.

Transition year students from St Paul’s Secondary School, Greenhills, Dublin have been named the overall winners of the 3rd annual modern languages competition run by Trinity College Dublin to encourage more young people to study languages at third level.

The winners in language categories were:

  • Arabic - Scoil Mhuire Kanturk
  • French – Alexandra College Dublin
  • German – St. Paul’s Secondary School, Greenhills, Dublin
  • Irish – Dominican College Wicklow
  • Italian – Alexandra College Dublin
  • Spanish – Woodbrook College Bray
  • Turkish – joint winners – Woodbrook College Bray, and Desmond College Co Limerick.
  • Ms Nellie Tattersall and Ms Edel Nolan from Languages Connect, the organisation which enables supports for Government Languages policy implementation, generously funded the celebratory event, and were also there to welcome the prize winners, their teachers and their parents.

In today’s globalised world and in post-Brexit times competence in languages is a key asset for rewarding international careers, a more multilingual Irish workforce can help Ireland stay connected, prosper and maximise its opportunities as an economy, society and culture.

“Language competence is one of the biggest skills gaps in the Irish labour market and language graduates are highly sought after in a variety of sectors,” Dr Hoare told. “The aim of this competition was to encourage creative and critical thinking amongst TY students about why they would like to become fluent in a particular language as well as why they would like to learn about the culture and literature associated with the language. Speaking a second or third language definitely equips students for a wide variety of careers while also providing a distinct competitive advantage in an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world”

Winning posters will be displayed in AB5042, so please come and have a look when you get a chance. Photos from the day can be seen here.
