Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences

We are a research-led Faculty, with strategic research areas including cancer, ageing, inclusive society, next generation medical devices, immunology & infection and neuroscience. Our graduates are the top in their field, with many alumni in key positions both nationally and internationally. Our staff have research strengths in multiple areas, spanning several of Trinity's key research themes. The School of Dental Science's research strengths are in relation to clinical dentistry (including ageing and special needs dentistry), microbiology and dental materials. Researchers in the School and Hospital collaborate across College (AMBER, TILDA) and are internationally recognised for their work on areas such as waterline decontamination, MRSA and fungal biology. The School of Medicine accounts for approximately one quarter of the total research income for the College, making it an extremely vibrant and research-active school. The main research themes of the School of Medicine are: cancer, ageing, immunology and infection, genetics, neurosciences, molecular medicine and population health. The School of Nursing and Midwifery has systematically built research capacity and as a result has the highest proportion and number of PhD qualified staff amongst all schools of nursing and midwifery in Ireland. The School conducts research that is of high social relevance and is guided by college, national and international research, along with nursing, midwifery and healthcare strategies. The School’s research includes a high degree of collaboration with our health service partners and the main research themes include: aging, chronic illness, maternity care, mental health and healthcare innovation.
