Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in our School

Welcome to the School of Genetics and Microbiology’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) pages. In these pages you will find information about the School and its effort to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in the School through analysis and actions. The aim is to ensure that our School has the best learning and working environment and opportunities for all. As part of these goals our School has been a participant in the Athena SWAN process since 2019 and holds an Athena SWAN bronze award since 2020.

Contact us:

To talk in confidence regarding any concerns or issues, feel free to contact the Director of EDI (Dr Carsten Kröger) directly at carsten.kroeger@tcd.ie

We are also working on an online anonymous suggestion box. Use it to draw our attention to issues of EDI in SGM and to make suggestions for how the school might address EDI. These can feed into the policy deliberations of the EDI committee, and may eventually be reflected in future school policies.

School EDI Committee

The SGM EDI Committee will seek to understand and improve aspects of our School, including but not limited to, those covered by the 10 equality grounds of the University: Age, Civil status, Disability, Family status including carer status, Gender (including gender identity), Traveller community membership, Ethnicity (race, skin colour, nationality or ethnic origin), Religion, Sexual orientation, and Socio-economic status. The SGM EDI Committee will:

  • Lead and progress the School’s EDI initiatives for both staff and students including gender initiatives such as membership of the Athena SWAN Charter
  • Implement the School’s Athena SWAN action plan
  • Prepare the Athena SWAN application for a Silver award in 2024
  • Promote a sense of community in our School
  • Report to School Executive Committee (through the Chairperson who, as Director of EDI is a member of the Executive).

Membership

Membership of the Committee is representative of our School community including gender balance and diversity; disciplines and grades; staff and students. It is anticipated that the Committee will meet four to six times per year.
