Research Expertise

Dr Emer Guinan is an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine with responsibility for the Interprofessional Learning programme for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Her main research interest is in the role of exercise and physical activity in ameliorating treatment side effects and optimising survivorship for patients with cancer. Her work considers both the therapeutic and the physiological impact of exercise programmes. She has a particular interest in the role of exercise for patients with complex cancer presentations including patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract and those with advanced disease.

  • Title
    • Preoperative inspiratory muscle training to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing esophageal resection (the PREPARE study)
  • Summary
    • This multi-centre international trial is examining the effect of a preoperative programme of inspiratory muscle training on post-operative pulmonary outcomes in patients undergoing oesophagectomy
  • Title
    • Rehabilitative Strategies Following Oesophageal Cancer (ReStOre trial)
  • Summary
    • This project comprises two studies; 1)a longitudinal assessment of the effect of curative treatment for oesopahgeal cancer on physical performance and 2) an investigation of the feasibility and efficacy of a rehabilitative programme of exercise and dietary intervention following oesophageal cancer treatment completion.
