During the 69th UN Commission on the Status of Women, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, represented by Dr Tara Bedi and Dr Michael King, presented evidence demonstrating how women's empowerment can be advanced through social protection programmes at a side event hosted by Ambassador Mythen and his team at the Irish Mission to the UN.

The session, 'Shaping Change', was opened by Ireland's Minister of Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, who reaffirmed Ireland's commitment to gender equality and to reaching those in greatest need. Dr Bedi and Dr King, along with colleagues from the World Bank and Concern Worldwide, presented research findings from Malawi, Cameroon & Mauritania that demonstrated the multiple social and economic benefits from building in a gender component into economic inclusion interventions.  The research findings underscore the criticality of this work that can clearly chart sustainable pathways out of extreme poverty.
