Research

Research student working at her PCThe Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering undertakes research in a number of selected themes, including; Bioengineering, Fracture and Fatigue of Materials, Fluids, Acoustics and Vibration, Fluids and Heat Transfer, Manufacturing Technology and Systems, and Tribology and Surface Engineering.

The research groups have a significant number of nationally funded projects, operate in directly funded projects with industry and compete successfully for European Funded R&D contracts. The research activity ongoing in the department is characterised by a high level of interdisciplinary collaboration both within the department and with areas such as life sciences, physics, computer science, civil engineering and electronic engineering. The department has a strong research culture with in excess of 19 postdoctoral researchers and research fellows, and approximately 57 postgraduate students. The department actively encourages applications under funding mechanisms such as IRCSET, SFI and HRB. (Further information of the research group activities is available under the index on the left hand side)

The department conducts research in collaboration with Irish industry through either direct or state funded projects. Exchequer funding mechanisms include: Enterprise Ireland's Commercialisation Fund, Innovation Partnership Scheme or the Innovation Voucher incentive. In addition, IRCET offer the Enterprise Partnership scheme for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. A list of Irish companies in the engineering sector as compiled by Enterprise Ireland can be found here.
