Preventing Aircraft Ground Collisions
Every week, somewhere in the world, a commercial aircraft has an accident while manoeuvring on the ground. The total cost of these accidents is estimated at ?5 Billion per year. WingWatch is an obstacle detection and collision warning system aimed at allowing large vehicles such as aircraft to manoeuvre safely. It is based on patented technology using sensors in the aircraft fuselage and associated robotics software to automatically detect obstacles and warn the pilots of potential collisions. The project will develop a platform technology in vehicle manoeuvring applicable to a range of vehicles.
