Research Degrees

Applicants are welcomed to investigate subjects in fields that correspond to the research interests of staff. The research masters, M.Litt (max 60,000 words) is carried out over two years, while the PhD (up to 100,000 words in length) takes up to four years. Most students enter on the M.Litt register and those wishing to advance to PhD may apply to upgrade in their second year, if the topic and progress develop to an appropriate level. Applicants with Masters degrees may be admitted directly onto the PhD register on a probationary basis, subject to confirmation based on progress. There is an annual review process to monitor progress throughout.

The entry requirements for research post-graduates is a good 2.1 or equivalent in Art History. In some instances, graduates of cognate disciplines may be considered for entry to research degrees.
