Why should I take this Trinity Elective?
Less than a quarter of the world speaks English, and developing skills in a global language like Chinese opens up a world of opportunities. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some basic knowledge, these electives offer a unique chance to explore the language and culture of the world’s most spoken native language. You'll learn how to communicate effectively while delving into Chinese culture, from its fascinating history to contemporary societal themes. Along the way, you’ll develop transferable skills that are highly valued by employers and become a more confident global citizen.
Beginner Level: Chinese Language and Culture
This course is designed for complete beginners with no prior knowledge of Chinese. It introduces the fundamentals of the language, including basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, while also engaging with key cultural topics in their linguistic context.

What will I learn?
- Communicate appropriately at a beginner’s level (CEFR A1).
- Explore the cultures and societies of Chinese-speaking regions.
- Understand the basics of Chinese linguistic structures and writing.
- Reflect critically on your language-learning journey.

What will I do?
- Attend 9 x 2-hour face-to-face classes.
- Engage in 82 hours of self-directed activities, including online learning, language quizzes, and cultural discussions.
- Complete a reflective learning journal and deliver a Pecha Kucha presentation on a key cultural topic.

- 30% Language quizzes.
- 30% Participation in online discussions on cultural and linguistic themes.
- 10% Reflective learning journal.
- 30% Pre-recorded Pecha Kucha presentation and written script.
Post-Beginner Level: Chinese Language and Culture
This course is ideal for students who have some prior knowledge of Chinese, such as those who have completed a beginner-level course or equivalent (e.g., Leaving Certificate Chinese or HSK Level 1). It builds on your existing skills and introduces new language competencies while exploring contemporary societal issues in China.

- Deepen your understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and societal themes.
- Develop linguistic competence in key areas like preferences, plans, and describing personal circumstances.
- Consolidate your knowledge of Chinese characters in various contexts.

- Participate in language classes to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
- Engage with online quizzes, discussion boards, and cultural reflections.
- Prepare a Pecha Kucha presentation on a cultural topic of your choice.

Who can take these Trinity Electives?
Both electives are open to any eligible student, with the beginner module available to complete beginners and the post-beginner module suited to those with basic prior knowledge of Chinese.
