Celebrating Professor Michael Shevlin
On Wednesday June 3rd, we had the pleasure of celebrating Professor Michael Shevlin at a special event marking his upcoming retirement later this summer from Trinity College Dublin, after an extraordinary career!
It was a joyful and heartfelt occasion, infused with the humanity, humility and vision that have defined Michael's work throughout his career and touched so many lives along the way. In true Michael style, the day was never really about him. Instead, it focused on looking forward and exploring the next steps in building a more inclusive society. Titled 'Shaping Our Future', the event brought together parents, students, policymakers, business partners, colleagues from the School of Education and many others who have shared in Michael's vision and work over the years.
A lively panel discussion chaired by Áine Kerr, followed by a thought-provoking roundtable conversation facilitated by Chris Chapman sparked important discussions about what the next twenty years could look like for education, employment and wider society, and how we can continue creating opportunities for everyone to participate, contribute and thrive.
Later in the afternoon, colleagues from across Michael's three decades at Trinity gathered to celebrate with him, sharing memories, laughter and appreciation for the enormous impact he has had on so many people and initiatives throughout his career. A respected academic, a pioneer in inclusive education and employment, and a tireless champion for people with intellectual disabilities, Michael's influence can be seen in the lives of countless students, families, colleagues and businesses who have been inspired by his unwavering commitment to inclusion.
For all of us in TCPID, Michael has been much more than a colleague and leader. He has been a mentor, a source of wisdom and encouragement, and a driving force behind our vision and values. His belief in the potential of every person has shaped our programme, our team members and our work in ways that will continue long into the future. While he may be stepping away from day to day life in Trinity, the impact of his work, leadership and friendship will continue to be felt for many years to come. Thank you, Michael Shevlin, for your leadership, friendship and steadfast commitment to TCPID and to making society more inclusive for all. We wish you every happiness, adventure and success in the next chapter.
