The INCLUDE-ID Network

The INCLUDE-ID Network (pronounced “included”) is a consortium of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ireland that offer third-level courses for students with intellectual disabilities. The network is committed to improving course offerings for students with intellectual disabilities through collaborative research, the creation of guidance materials and the delivery of educational workshops.

Background

In February 2024, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) launched PATH 4 Phase 2, a funding initiative designed to support the development of new and existing third-level courses for students with intellectual disabilities across Ireland. As these courses develop nationwide, it is essential that higher education institutions are equipped with the expertise and support needed to establish and sustain these programmes effectively.

PATH 4 Phase 2 also presents a valuable opportunity to examine essential aspects of course design and delivery, with the aim of enhancing student experiences and informing best practices at a national level. In alignment with this objective, the INCLUDE-ID Network has been established as a collaborative platform for practitioners.

This network brings together higher education institutions offering programmes for students with intellectual disabilities, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, the development of training resources, the delivery of targeted workshops, and the undertaking of joint research initiatives. Through these activities, the INCLUDE-ID Network seeks to advance professional expertise and contribute to the ongoing enhancement of third-level educational provision for students with intellectual disabilities across Ireland.

The network currently includes members from the following programmes:

• Project WAVE: Working Towards Academic and Vocational Equity (Atlantic Technological University: Sligo, Donegal & Mayo)

• CUMAS (University of Galway)

• Certificate in Skills for Independent Living (Dundalk Institute of Technology)

• Creative Pathways for All – You Belong in IADT (Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design + Technology)

• Pathways Together Programme (Technological University Dublin: Blanchardstown and Tallaght Campuses)

• Certificate in Arts, Science, and Inclusive Applied Practice (Trinity Centre for People with Intellectual Disabilities)

• The Inclusive Learning Initiative (ILI) (Previously held at Maynooth University, 2011–2018)
