- Pilot feasibility study on the use of Echolight bone screening device in people with intellectual disabilities
- Summary
- Osteoporosis is a significant concern among individuals with intellectual disabilities. The prevalence of this condition is much higher and presents at an earlier age for people with intellectual disability than adults in the general population, yet research indicates inadequate attendance for diagnostic screenings such as DXA. This study aims to evaluate the viability of using an alternative bone health assessment system, namely the Echolight. The Echolight stands as an innovative technology utilising REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) to measure bone mineral density.

- Get Wise About Your Health: COVID 19 Costed Extensions Fund
- Summary
- Due to the pandemic, the team were not able to engage directly with the participants as planned via service providers and focus group interviews. Lockdown occurred at the time when the team were planning to visit homes and residences. The team, therefore, changed the methods of engagement with the participants. This, however, created two challenges which contributed to further delays. Firstly, as this was a change in methodology, the ethics applications from each service had to be amended and resubmitted. Secondly, individuals with intellectual disability were predominantly unfamiliar with online engagement or online interviews. The team needed to promote this type of engagement. This involved building familiarity with the online experience; establishing the skill, devices and broadband connection of each participant; and working with carers to support activity before interviews could take place. The actual interview process had to be remodelled as the team were initially using focus group techniques with themes and concepts, which were switched to a direct one-to-one format. This grant is to support completion of the project.

- Investigation of constipation and its severity among adults with intellectual disability
- Summary
- The aims of the study are two-fold. Firstly, a cross-sectional approach will identify factors which contribute to the severity of constipation or its amelioration. Secondly, a longitudinal approach examining constipation severity over time will identify factors associated with increasing or decreasing severity with a view to determining whether constipation severity is progressive in this population.

- People with Intellectual Disability as Physical Activity Leaders (P-PALS)
- Summary
- P: PALS - People with intellectual disability: Physical Activity Leaders An EIT Health Funded Project within the Citizen Engagement stream Aim The aim of this project is to design and pilot a programme to enable people with intellectual disability (ID) to become physical activity leaders (PALs) in their community. Partners This is a cross country collaborative project. Led by Trinity College Dublin (represented by the Intellectual Disability Supplement to TILDA (IDS-TILDA) and the TCD Sports Centre), the project will be implemented in collaboration with Age & Opportunity and the University of Barcelona. The two locations, Ireland and Spain, have been selected to enable a cross-country comparison. It allows for the delivery of a practical programme in two different service contexts, cultural contexts and languages, providing a different perspective for both countries - both, however, with a shared vision of access to and participation in sport, leisure, art, cultural and other activities as a central component of how citizens with ID engage in society and achieve a sense of community belonging. The IDS-TILDA study provides longitudinal research data on the health and ageing experience of older people with an intellectual disability in addition to expertise in engaging older people with intellectual disability in research. The TCD Sports Centre is the lead sports partner, with experience catering for diverse populations and providing an ideal city centre location that will facilitate accessibility and ease of access for participants. The University of Barcelona brings extensive research in the area of physical activity for people intellectual disability and this is complemented by the established and successful leader programme, Go for Life, for older people in the general population in Ireland run by Age & Opportunity. Current Programme The proposed training programme serves to empower older people with intellectual disability to be more physically active, improve functional mobility and also to lead their peers in physical activity. The newly developed course will be piloted in a 6-week programme in Trinity College Dublin Sport Centre in January and February 2018 (with one session per week) and aims to attract 12 participants with ID and 6 support workers (one support worker from each ID service centre). These trained leaders with ID will then lead up to 6 people in their own centres using a 5-week training programme. Programme implementation will occur concurrently in Ireland and Spain, with evaluation of the programme produced mid-way and upon full completion of the programme. Collaboration, as proposed with P-PALs, facilitates the enhancement of the mainstream agenda for people with disabilities, to ensure equal and equitable participation in society, but informs the mainstream physical activity programme with regard to increasing numbers of the general older population facing cognitive decline. It also fulfils the ageing sector's goal to present the ageing experience as a heterogeneous one requiring a multitude of diverse policy and service responses.

- Improving Health Assessments for People with an Intellectual Disability
- Summary
- For the first time in history, people with an intellectual disability are living well into old age. This success story is a result of improved health care, better living conditions, access to education, and community supports. Despite this success, the life expectancy of a person with an intellectual disability is nearly 20 years less than their non-disabled peers. For decades, health and health care inequalities among people with an intellectual disability have been an issue, due to inaccessible healthcare information and service provision. These challenges can increase exclusion from preventative screenings, delay regular health assessments, impact on quality of life, and further marginalise people with an intellectual disability. This MOOC, a free three-week online course, will explore how to improve health assessments for people with an intellectual disability. Learners will explore best practice techniques for communication, assessment, and developing accessible materials for people with an intellectual disability. It is hosted on the FutureLearn platform.

- NUTRILIT- ID: Empowering Health Literacy and Nutrition Education for Adults with Intellectual Disability
- Summary
- There is a growing population of adults with intellectual disability [ID] who are reaching older age. However, for adults with ID, multimorbidity, higher prevalence of poor health, and different patterns of disease are significant and health disparity which has been described as a `cascade" is frequently experienced. These disparities include lack of health care access, lack of education, higher levels of poorer health, lack of communication augmentations and lack of reasonable adjustments to provide equity and support individuals engage meaningfully in their own health. Yet targeted health information and educational campaigns are largely missing though recognized as key in supporting healthy, happy ageing Compounding these difficulties are high rates of illiteracy and communication challenges. The goal for this project is to develop an online educational course on eating well to improve health for those with intellectual disability.

- A Blueprint of CAre for MENopause: CARMEN
- Summary
- This study aims to co-create a blueprint of care for menopause with all women who have experienced or are experiencing menopause. Public Patient Involvement (PPI) is integrated from the beginning, and each project within the study will contribute to the development of a Digital Health Solution for CAre at MENopause (CARMEN) accessible to all women. A participatory mixed methods design will be employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study aims to address four key research questions that inform the blueprint of care for menopause. Each PhD candidate will follow a structured framework to support their research, including research question development, evidence building through systematic/scoping literature reviews, convening a public and patient involvement (PPI) panel, engaging in collective intelligence activities with the PPI panel and field experts, planning ethics, recruitment, and data collection, analysing data, and writing their theses.
