Description

My current research interests are centred on the process of communication. In particular I am interested in how people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities communicate. Other areas of interest are: the human rights of people with disabilities; the role of person centred planning in disability services; quality of life of people with intellectual disability and also public health nursing and the process of reflection in nursing.

    • A collaborative initiative to implement person-centred practice in residential care settings for children and adults with an intellectual disability
  • Summary
    • This action research project is designed to examine working practices in a large provider services for people with intellectual disability and reorient them towards a person centred focus. The project uses a collaborative inquiry methodology and is a joint venture between the university and the service provider. The action research will be located in six pilot units within the service. Evaluation of service provision will take place pre and post the jointly agreed interventions.

    • Evaluation of a Community-Based Initiative at Peamount Services
  • Summary
    • The project aims to evaluate the outcomes of a service initiative, instigated 3 years ago, in which 9 people with intellectual disabilities moved from a service-based congregated setting into a community-based home. A mixed method approach will be utilised to data collection. Interviews will be held with all residents who agree to take part and with one relative of each participant. The Personal Outcome Measures of each particpant will also be evaluated.Qualitative data will be thematically analysed. Quantitative data (some aspects of POMs) will be analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The outcome of the project will contribute to understanding of the impact of deinstitutionalisation.

    • A Survey of the views of Nurse Managers, Nurse Practice Development Staff and Registered Nurses in Intellectual Disability in Ireland in response to the Review of the Intellectual Disability Undergraduate Nursing Programme.

    • This project used focus groups to survey the views of 67 self selected registered intellectual disability nurses in Ireland concerning the education of intellectual disability nurses. The respondents' views were subsequently forwarded to the Department of Health as a submission to to the Review of Undergraduate Nursing Programme.

    • Shaping the Future of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland
  • Summary
    • Registered Intellectual Disability Nurses (RNID), are core providers of services to people with an intellectual disability in Ireland. Changing demographics, renewed movement into community settings and newly emerging health care needs of people with intellectual disability imply that the role of the RNID is changing. These changes represent both opportunities and challenges for intellectual disability nursing and it is against this backdrop that the HSE has established a project to examine the current and future role of Registered Intellectual Disability nurses. This project is entitled: 'Shaping the Future of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland'.

    • Untold stories: the Intellectual / Learning Disability Nursing and Support staff project: an oral historical account of the sustainability of a health care workforce.
  • Summary
    • Oral history, in the field of intellectual disabilities has in the past almost exclusively focussed on the lives of people who were detained in large institutions and hospitals for the mentally deficient or handicapped. Giving voice to such histories has been invaluable in providing unique and authentic insights into the lives of people with intellectual disabilities during the last century. However, little is known about what life was like as a nurse working the field of intellectual disabilities in the last century. In both the UK and Ireland large congregated settings have closed [UK] or are in the process of closing [Ireland]. At the same time a whole cohort of nurses and health care assistants who entered into the workforce in the 1970s and 1980s are retiring. It is the aim of the project to capture some of the oral testimonies of these healthcare staff before they leave the workforce. Semi structured interviews will take place with 20 participants in Ireland and 20 in the UK. Each participant must have worked for 30 years or more supporting people with intellectual disability. Four researchers will carry out the interviews with staff who work in one of two centres in the Leinster area. The interviews will subsequently be professionally transcribed. The interviews will be analysed using thematic data analysis, the UK data will be analysed by the researchers based in the University of West London and a report will be prepared for publication and dissemination which will also include presentation of the findings at conferences in the UK and Ireland. Furthermore subject to the participant agreeing each interview will be posted on an oral history website which will be hosted by the Royal College of Nursing in London where the testimony will be accessible to future generations of researchers.
