What is the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty?
Public bodies have a legal obligation and responsibility to promote equality, prevent discrimination and protect human rights throughout every aspect of our operations and functions. This is called the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty, arising from Section 42 of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Act 2014. It requires public bodies to assess relevant human rights and equality issues on an ongoing basis and then set out our policies, plans and actions to address issues and report on progress annually. The purpose of the Duty is to make sure public bodies think about the equality and human rights implications when they provide services, implement policies and procedures and what actions they need to take to address the issues identified.
