The School of English is organizing an event which will feature the new research on the figure of the child in late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century literature and culture.
Speakers include Clíona Ó Gallchoir (UCC) on the origins of the novel for children; Amy Prendergast (TCD) on adolescent diary keepers; Susan Manly (University of St. Andrews) on public education in fiction by Maria Edgeworth; and Jane Carroll (TCD) on early nineteenth-century children’s fiction and dolls. The afternoon will close with Aileen Douglas (TCD) discussing with Jarlath Killeen (TCD) his new book, Imagining the Irish Child: Discourses of Childhood in Irish Anglican Writing of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries.
