The Artist's Eye: Adam Shiu-Yang Shaw  14 July – 24 September 2023 Opening Night: Thursday 13 July, 6pm – 8pm Acknowledging the crucial role artists play in influencing and shaping other artistic practices, ‘The Artist’s Eye’ series asks those exhibiting in Gallery 1 to invite an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2. In the next instalment, Liz Magor has invited a former pupil at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, artist Adam Shiu-Yang Shaw. In his practice, Adam Shiu-Yang Shaw addresses psychogeography, memory, and the built environment. Working between objects, rooms and images, Shaw uses everyday construction materials, hobbyist techniques and discarded consumer goods to model and collage fragments of his surroundings. The pre-existing forms which he aggregates are traced, disassembled and tailored into hybrid configurations and timelines. Adam Shiu-Yang Shaw (b. Edmonton, Treaty 6, Canada) works between Berlin and Edmonton. Shaw studied at The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Emily Carr University in Vancouver and participated in the Berlin Program for Artists. Selected solo exhibitions include Neither Parts, nor Spares, BPA// Raum, Berlin (2022); What Time Has Left, Wschód, Warsaw (2021); Can there be Forgiveness?, Ashley, Berlin (2018); F-150, Polansky Gallery, Prague (2018); and Vinegar Stone & the Language of Flowers, Towards, Toronto (2017).
