About this event This course, delivered by Trinity School of English staff, will provide an introduction to major authors of poetry, drama and prose through close examination of selected texts, chosen from among those prescribed for the Leaving Certificate. The course will be of special interest to teachers and pupils preparing for the examination but the lectures will be directed towards a more general audience as well. Fee € 50 for the entire series. Individual lectures are € 5 each. Concessionary rates for the full series will be € 40 or individual lecture € 4 each. The concessionary rate applies to: students, OAPs, unemployed, groups of 20+, TCD staff and Graduates. Date, Time and Place Tuesdays 19:00-20:00, Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. Tickets available via Eventbrite and at the door. Schedule There will be ten weekly lectures beginning on Tuesday 3 October 2023. Lectures will be uploaded at 7pm on Tuesdays. Registration for individual lectures will close at 6pm on the relevant day. 3 October - Prof. Andrew Murphy: William Shakespeare, Hamlet 10 October - Dr. Mark Sweetnam, Poetry by John Donne 17 October - Dr. Ema Vyroubalová: William Shakespeare, Macbeth 25th October - Reading Week: no lecture 31 October - Dr. Clare Clarke: Mary Shelley, Frankenstein 7 November - Dr. Amy Prendergast: Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice 14 November - Prof. Jarlath Killeen: George Eliot, Silas Marner 21 November - Prof. Stephen Matterson: Poetry by Emily Dickinson 28 November - Dr. Seán Hewitt: Poetry by Gerard Manley Hopkins 5 December - Dr. Tom Walker: Poetry by Paula Meehan 12 December - Dr. Rebecca Long: Jason Wallace, Out of Shadows Online/Video Recordings of Lectures The lectures are happening live in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. However they will also be recorded. If you purchased a ticket to a particular lecture, to several lectures, or to the entire series, you will be emailed a link to the video recording of the lecture or lectures as soon as these are available (usually the very next day). The recordings will be available and watchable at any time until the end of the Evening Lecture series in May. We regret that it has not been possible to livestream the lectures as they happen.
