Tanya O’Sullivan will discuss the crucial role urban space played in the production of scientific knowledge, as it features in her monograph Geographies of City Science: Urban Lives and Origin Debates in Late Victorian Dublin (University of Pittsburg Press, 2019. Organised as part of the Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series.

Tanya O’Sullivan is an independent researcher based in Co. Down. She holds a BA (Archaeology and Art History) and an MA (Archaeology) from University College Dublin. Her MA research involved an avi-faunal analysis of Viking-age bird bone samples from excavations in Dublin city. She was employed by archaeological consultancies in Scotland for ten years before working as a freelance archaeozoologist in Northern Ireland. In 2014 she completed a PhD in the School of Geography, Queen’s University Belfast, where her research interests revolved around the histories and geographies of science. Her monograph Geographies of City Science:Urban Lives and Origin Debates in Late Victorian Dublin was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2019. She is currently an editor on the Tyndall Correspondence Project.

The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. It provides a forum for discussion and dissemination of new ideas, perspectives, and research on Irish history, Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. All are welcome.
