Art, Technology, and Digital Community

An in-person discussion between researchers, research scientist Autmn Brown (TCD), and Human+ fellow Dr Kata Szita (TCD) organised by the School of Education. A discussion between researchers on the evolution of youth identities in digital spaces. This discussion will explore the ways in which combining art and technology can empower people to respond to pressing societal issues and create community across national, political, and ideological borders. Autumn Brown is a research scientist at University College Dublin and a member of the Science and Society Research Group at Trinity College Dublin. Her work takes a transdisciplinary approach to science learning beyond the classroom through a combination of art, technology, and social justice. Her previous projects included Tech Scéal, a collaborative learning series exploring algorithmic justice and creative coding with families in Direct Provision, and Re:Generation a co-curated art-science exhibition centred around Stem Cell research at the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Edinburgh. Collaborating with commmunities across disciplinary, experiential and geographical borders, she is dedicated to creating a more just and joyful future through open research. Dr. Kata Szita: Taking an interdisciplinary approach of cognitive science and digital media technology, her work focuses on how human behaviour and mental well-being are affected by the use of augmented reality (AR). Focusing on how our brains and bodies react to extended reality (XR) experiences, Szita’s research highlights how important virtual spaces are for human interaction and the need to foster positive and healthy online connections. She explores how AR can help by projecting humans into the surrounding world to create a meaningful social experience. With almost a decade of research at the intersections of digital media technology and human behaviour, Szita’s research is at the forefront of interdisciplinarity. Working with philosophers, arts scholars, neuroscientists and psychologists, she seeks a multi-lensed approach to understanding the technological and human side of digital community spaces.
