An Evening With James Harpur - TCD/Arts Council Writer Fellow 2023
The 2022 Writer Fellow is acclaimed poet. novelist, and memoirist James Harpur. In this free public event, James will discuss his work with novelist Deirdre Madden. TS Eliot once described writing poetry as a ‘mug’s game’, and it’s a game James has played for most of his life. He has also produced translations, a verse memoir, a novel and even a song or two. James will read from his work and discuss his background and the writer’s life with Deirdre, including his beginnings, his living abroad on Crete, and his freelance life. James Harpur has published eight collections of poetry, including The White Silhouette, an Irish Times Book of the Year, and his verse memoir, The Examined Life, an odyssey through boarding school. In 2021 he published his debut novel, The Pathless Country, set in the years leading up to the 1916 Rising. The book won the JG Farrell Prize, an Irish Writers’ Centre Novel Fair Award and was shortlisted for the John McGahern Prize. James is a member of Aosdána. Deirdre Madden is the Co-Director of the MPhil in Creative Writing in the Oscar Wilde Centre, Trinity College Dublin. She is an award winning novelist whose works include Authenticity (2002), Molly Fox's Birthday (2008) and, most recently, Time Present and Time Past (2013) She is a member of Aosdána The Writer Fellowship was inaugurated in 1986 and is co-funded by the School of English and the Arts Council of Ireland. Writer Fellows teach on the M.Phil graduate courses and offer workshops to undergraduate students and to members of the public. Past Writer Fellows include Anne Enright, Eoin McNamee, John McGahern, Deirdre Madden, Marina Carr, Sebastian Barry, Caoilinn Hughes, and Hilary Fannin.
