A planetary health perspective on the climate crisis

This webinar will include a talk by Prof Sabine Gabrysch “A planetary health perspective on the climate crisis” followed by discussion of the talk with her colleague, Dr. Nathalie Lambrecht. Dr. Lambrecht will discuss this work with a particular focus on the intersection of food systems and planetary health. Prof Sabine Gabrysch was appointed Professor for Climate Change and Health, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in 2019 ,the first such appointment at a German medical school, and jointly as head of climate resilience research at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Following medical studies at the Universities of Tübingen and Heidelberg in Germany and Brown University in the United States, Sabine Gabrysch worked as a junior doctor in Sweden completed an MSc in epidemiology, and later a PhD, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and worked at Heidelberg University’s Institute of Global Health in 2009, leading the Unit of Epidemiology and Biostatistics from 2014 to 2019. Her research focus is maternal and child health in low-income settings, in particular early life malnutrition. In 2018, Sabine Gabrysch was awarded the ‘Preis für mutige Wissenschaft’ (Award for Bold Research) by the state of Baden-Württemberg for her research Bangladesh on Food and Agricultural Approaches to Reducing Malnutrition. Dr. Nathalie Lambrecht is a postdoctoral researcher in the Climate Change and Health Working Group at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin Institute of Public Health and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany. Dr. Lambrecht is a nutritional epidemiologist working at the intersection of food systems and planetary health in low- and high-income contexts. In research projects in Ghana and Bangladesh, she has investigated linkages between child undernutrition, diets, and infection, and the impacts of small-holder livestock agriculture on health. She is currently a lead investigator of the NURISHD project, which aims to evaluate the feasibility of transitioning nursing homes and hospitals in Germany to the Planetary Health diet. Dr. Lambrecht received her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and her BS in Health Sciences from Saint Mary’s College of California in the United States.
