Printing House Square

Nestled behind the historical Printing House and overlooking Pearse Street, stands the impressive Printing House Square. The new Printing House Square accommodation building consists of three floors below basement and five floors above.

Now home to 249 students, the building came alive when students started unpacking their bags on November 1st 2022. The residential part of the building contains 42 apartments. Each apartment has between 3 and 8 ensuite bedrooms and shared living space and kitchen. These much needed student accommodation units are built over a new, state -of-the-art Health Centre, the disAbility Services Hub and sports facilities, including 3 international competition squash courts and a racquetball (handball) court. It is also home to staff of Estates and Facilities with open plan office space, storage space for construction/maintenance materials. There is also workshop facilities for the Estates and Facilities department.

Sustainability

The building has photovoltaic panels generating electricity and solar tubes boosting the domestic hot water. It uses recycled rainwater for flushing and other water uses. The building has a large mass of concrete and stone, providing thermal mass and thermal cooling in a slow-release way and is a ‘shallow-plan’ structure, allowing natural light to penetrate into the floorplates, providing solar gain for the rooms and a reduction in artificial light usage. All lights are LED based fittings, with PIR sensors appropriately used throughout the building. Efficient and local control radiators are used in each bedroom, and every apartment is metered separately. The whole building is monitored and controlled by a sophisticated building management system.
