About the Dean of Students and Civic Enagement

The current Dean of Students and Civic Engagement is Prof. Damian Murchan . 

Damian Murchan is a Professor in Education and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. He is President of the Association for Educational Assessment Europe, 2024-2026. A former primary teacher and principal, he values the crucial role that education plays in the development and wellbeing of individuals and of society. In Trinity he has held former positions as Head of the School of Education and Head of the School of Creative Arts.  

His research and teaching interests include educational reform, assessment methods, and professional development for teachers, with particular emphasis on evidence-informed policy and practice. He has held several advisory roles supporting the development of assessment policy and practice in Ireland and internationally, including extensive work relating to high-stakes secondary school certificate examinations.   

As Dean of Students and Civic Engagement, Prof Murchan is responsible for enhancing the student experience at Trinity, advocating for students' interests, wellbeing, and development while also strengthening the University's engagement with wider society. Trinity students enjoy many opportunities for involvement, leadership, and personal exploration and the Dean promotes the integration of students’ out-of-class experience with the academic mission of College. Working with students, staff, and College services, the Dean promotes activities, volunteering, community-based learning, engaged research, and public engagement by students and staff that has positive societal impact.
