Book cover for Extended Reality PerformanceJoin us for the book launch of Extended Reality Performance: scenographic practice in virtual and augmented reality technologies, edited by Néill O’Dwyer, Jo Scott and Gareth W. Young and published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama.

Extended reality (XR) technologies – including virtual, augmented and mixed reality – are transforming how performance is created, experienced and understood. Bringing together artists, designers and researchers working at the forefront of this emerging field, Extended Reality Performance explores how immersive technologies are reshaping scenography, storytelling, embodiment and audience participation.

Through a diverse collection of international case studies, the book moves through (what the editors coin) the new “spectrum of extended reality performance”, from geo-located sound and augmented-reality performance to mixed-reality environments, volumetric video, VR dance-theatre, avatar embodiment and live performance in social VR. Foregrounding the voices of practitioners, it examines not only what XR performance can be, but how it is made: its creative processes, challenges, methodologies and emerging aesthetic languages.

The launch will be a hybrid event, bringing together the editors and chapter contributors through a combination of in-person attendees and a live Zoom call. Subject matter expert, Professor Mads Haahr (School of Computer Science and Statistics) will briefly introduce the book and reflect on the rapidly evolving relationship between art, design and digital, immersive technologies.
