The Airway Microbiome in Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) represents the classical pulmonary disease of unremitting bacterial infections resulting in chronic progressive end-organ injury. The CF airway is now known to be host to a complex community of microorganisms or ‘microbiome’.

We have shown that the airway microbiome in children with CF is distinct from that of children without CF and we now aim to focus on characterising the metabolic profiles of these microbial communities with the specific goal of identifying bacterial metabolites with the potential to influence inflammation and thus disease severity.
