Junior & Senior Freshman
In first year, we help you to develop your written and oral language skills, you will have a course in textual analysis and you will also attend a series of lectures in area studies (Landeskunde), which deal with political institutions, society and current affairs in German-speaking countries.
You will learn about German law through a specially designed course, which takes a thematic, practical and comparative approach to the core aspects of German Law, starting with its history, the German political and judicial systems and German constitutional law (Grundgesetz). This course is accompanied by an introductory course in specialist legal language.
In second year, we continue to develop your general language skills and you will be given an introduction to translation of general and legal texts. We will be working on individual and group projects, presentations skills and German essay writing. Part of the focus on preparing you for your third year abroad also includes a course on the university system in German-speaking countries and a course on the cultural history of Germany. In German law, we will deal with aspects of German Civil Law – BGB – or Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, which you will also study in Germany in your third year.
