Student Records - Pre-Requisites to Register

A. Examinations

  1. In order to rise with their class, and register for the next academic year, undergraduate students and postgraduate students undertaking a taught course must obtain credit for the previous academic year by satisfactory attendance at lectures and tutorials, by carrying out the required course work, and by successful completion of examinations.

Subject to the specific regulations concerning repetition of year in each course, students who fail to satisfy the requirements of their year may be permitted to register to repeat the year. Permission to repeat the year will normally be granted only to students who are considered to have made a serious attempt at their examinations, or who have been able to provide the Senior Lecturer / Dean of Graduate Studies with acceptable reasons for absence from examinations.
  2. Postgraduate research students must carry out research under the direction of a Supervisor approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the nomination of the appropriate Director of Teaching & Learning. If progress is unsatisfactory, Supervisors may recommend to the Dean of Graduate Studies that a student’s registration should be terminated or not renewed.

The first year of registration is probationary for all postgraduate research students. Directors of Teaching & Learning (Postgraduate) exercise particular care in reviewing the progress of students after one year of research. The Director of Teaching & Learning, in consultation with the Supervisor and such other members of staff as may be appropriate, will only recommend the continuation of registration as a research student if the student has clearly established sufficient commitment and degree of promise that it seems reasonable to allow the student to proceed.

B. Fees

In all cases, registration cannot be completed until debts owing to the College have been paid and until all fees for the forthcoming year have been paid, or pledged as payable by an education authority.

Students who establish that they are eligible for the Government’s fee remission scheme for full-time undergraduate courses will qualify to have all or part of their tuition fees claimed from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) or Health Service Executive (HSE) by the College on their behalf.

In accordance with the terms of the fee remission scheme, undergraduate students repeating the year will not be eligible for fee remission and will be liable for full fees.

Students who have queries regarding their College fees should contact the Fees Office, telephone number: +353.1.896.1611, E-mail: stufees@tcd.ie. Further information can also be obtained from the Fees Office website.
