Student Records - Student Grants & Loans

The Student and Graduate Records Office liaises with grant authorities on student grants and loans, and distributing grant and loan cheques to registered students.

Student Grants

Higher Education Grants are awarded at undergraduate and postraduate level. In addition to free tuition at undergraduate level, the principal support available is a means-tested maintenance grant. Depending on the course you are pursuing, you may be eligible for a grant under one of these schemes:-

  • The Higher Education Grants Scheme, which applies to University Degree programmes.
  • The Vocational Education Committees' Scholarship Scheme, which applies to add-on degrees where students have already pursued Certificate/Diploma level (level 6 & 7) programmes.

You can obtain full details of the grant schemes outlined above from the Local Authorities and Vocational Education Committees. Details are available on the Department of Education & Skills website.

Applications for a grant should be submitted in the same name in which the student is / will be registered.

Certification of registration to Grant Funding Authorities

The College is obliged to report to state funding authorities the registration status of students in receipt of higher education grants. Reporting takes place in advance of the normal three staged payments made by the funding authorities.

In addition, the College is required to report on those students who satisfactorily passed end of year examinations.

Issue of grant cheques

Grant cheques are normally issued in three instalments at the beginning of each Term (ie, Michaelmas, Hilary, and Trinity) and can be collected from the Student and Graduate Records Office during office hours.

Grant holders who satisfy certain conditions may be eligible for what is known as a ‘top-up grant’, an amount additional to the ordinary grant, which is sent to the College for subsequent issue to the student.

The Student and Graduate Records Office will only issue grants cheques upon presentation of a valid TCD student ID card.

Grant cheques will be issued only to students who use the same name with both the College and Grant Authority (ie, the name in which the student is / will be registered should be the name in which application for a grant is made).

The Student and Graduate Records Office Notice Board in the Front Arch is updated regularly with details of cheques received from funding authorities.

Registered students on an exchange or visiting programme may nominate a person, in writing, to collect their grant cheque, identifying the instalments to be collected. The nominated person will be required to show photographic ID when collecting the cheque(s). Such students may request a nomination form from the Student Records Office for completion to nominate a third party to collect their grant cheque.
