What are the general procedures at Diploma & Certificate award ceremonies?

Certificates and Diplomas are publicly awarded, in the student’s registered name within class, by the Registrar of the College and University in the Public Theatre, Front Square, Trinity College; the ceremony is conducted in English.

Do I need to make application for the award?

Candidates for diploma or certificate awards do not need to make application. Those eligible are automatically scheduled for the award following publication of results confirming the passing of the final examination. Students are assigned to an award ceremony on the basis of the schedule of ceremonies drawn up annually. The Student and Graduate Records Office subsequently issues a letter of invitation the student to attend the award ceremony assigned.

I’ve appealed my result, can I proceed with the award?

Students with results under appeal are advised not to proceed with the award ceremony until the appeal is concluded. Please advise the Student and Graduate Records immediately if your results are under appeal.

Can I be admitted to the award In Absentia?

Candidates may be awarded their certificate / diploma without presenting in person. If you wish to have your certificate / diploma awarded in absentia please make a request by email to the Student and Graduate Records, with your student name, student number, date of birth, and course details. The Student and Graduate Records Office will issue, by registered post, the certificate / diploma parchment to those candidates admitted to the award in absentia. Alternatively, candidates who wish to collect their parchments in person should contact the Studnet and Graduate Records Office..

What happens if I fail to present at an award ceremony?

Successful students who fail to present on the appointed day will have their award bestowed in absentia, and their parchment will be posted to their home address following the award ceremony.

Where do award ceremonies take place ?

All award ceremonies take place in the Public Theatre, in the Front Square,Trinity College Dublin.

Candidates take the seat bearing their name in the Public Theatre no later than 30 minutes before the beginning of the ceremony. Candidatesmust enter the Pubic Theatre via the Green Room; this entrance is located at the rear of the Public Theatre. Candidates will have their role during the ceremony explained prior to commencement of the ceremony.

Candidates who fail to arrive in time may be refused admission to the ceremony.

What academic dress is required for award ceremonies?

All candidates should adhere to the following dress code:

  • Men should wear a dark suit, gown, and epitogue.
  • Women should wear black or white, or a combination of both, gown, and epitogue.

Can I hire academic / dress wear?

Candidates wishing to hire academicals must contact Armstrong & Oxford,Graduation House, First Floor, 44 Fashion City, Ballymount, Dublin 4, Tel: +353-1-4295736, Fax: +353-1-4295744.

Prior to the ceremony gowns may be collected from, and then returned afterwards to, Armstrong and Oxford.

Any queries regarding the hire and/or collection of academicals should be made directly to Armstrong & Oxford.

The charges (inclusive of VAT) are as follows, and must be paid at the point of collection:

  • Certificate € 20.00
  • Diploma € 20.00

Academicals must be returned after each ceremony, unless special arrangements with the supplier have been made.

Is a photography / framing service available on campus?

The College has appointed Lafayette Photography to provide a service to candidates on the days of Award ceremonies. On the evenings of award ceremonies, Lafayette Photography can be contacted in advance beforehand by telephoning +353.1.429 5740 or by emailing. Further details may be obtained at the Lafayette Photography website.

Please note that freelance photographers on the grounds of the campus are not agents of the College. You are advised not to use any of the unofficial photographers who may be on campus. Each year, some graduates complain of non-delivery of photographs or of poor-quality work by these photographers.

Is there access for people with a disability?

Candidates are requested to advise the Student and Graduate Records Office in advance if they or their guests require wheelchair access to the Public Theatre. Sign language interpreting services can be provided for the candidate upon request to the Student and Graduate Records Office; requests should be made at least one month in advance of the ceremony date.

How many guests tickets will I be issued?

A ticket for two guests will be issued by post at least one week prior to the ceremony. Tickets for overseas candidates will not be posted; but held in the Student and Graduate Records Office, Regent House, for collection.

Only ticket holders will be admitted to the ceremony in the first instance. No provision can be made for the issue of extra guest tickets.

Is parking available on the College campus?

Parking is not available on campus, except for candidates or guests with a disability and/or impaired mobility. Those requiring parking on this basis may enter through Lincoln Place Gate and park in the Front Square as directed by College Security Staff.

All other candidates are advised to park in the public parking facilities located in close proximity to the campus. The Park Rite car park in Fleet Street has agreed to provide parking at the special College rate of €2.50 an hour or €10 (max) per day for individuals presenting a 'Commencements Ticket'.

What language will the award parchment be presented in?

All diploma and certificate parchments are presented in English.
