Full Time Student Equivalent Data

Annual calculation and collation of Full-Time Student Equivalent (FTSE) data

Treatment of FTSE data in ARAM Model

Allocation of Core Recurrent Grant

The State core recurrent grant is allocated to Disciplines / Schools on the basis of FTSEs, to which student weightings and subject weightings are applied according to the principles for the ARAM agreed by Board.

To calculate the weighted FTSEs for each Discipline / School, the FTSE data provided to the Treasurer’s Office by the Senior Lecturer’s Office has the appropriate weightings applied to it as follows:

  • X Student Weighting (Table I)
  • X Subject Weighting (Tables IIa, IIb or IIc below)
  • = ARAM Weighted FTSEs

Student Weightings

Table I: The student weightings applied to the FTSE’s data are as follows:

Course Type Weightings
Undergraduate Degrees: 1.0
Undergraduate Diplomas: 0.75
Postgraduate Research Degrees: 3.0
Postgraduate Taught Degrees: 1.0
Postgraduate Research: MD,MCh,MAI,BD, 1.5
Postgraduate Taught Full-time Diplomas: 0.75
Postgraduate Taught Part-time Diplomas: 0.80 (as the FTE weighting for these courses is 0.5 this is a cumulative weighting of 0.40)

Subject Weightings:

Table IIa The Subject Weightings applied to Undergraduate courses are according to the subject category as follows:

Category Subject Weighting
A: Clinical stages of Medicine and Dentistry: 1.7
B: Laboratory – based Subjects (science, pre-clinical stages of medicine and dentistry, engineering and technology): 1.7
C: Subjects with a studio or laboratory or fieldwork element: 1.3
D: All other subjects: 1.0

Table IIb : These weightings are also applied to Postgraduate Taught courses, except that it is the Subject Weighting minus 1 i.e.:

Category Subject Weighting
A: Clinical stages of Medicine and Dentistry: 0.7
B: Laboratory – based Subjects (science, pre-clinical stages of medicine and dentistry, engineering and technology): 0.7
C: Subjects with a studio or laboratory or fieldwork element: 0.3
D: All other subjects: 0.0

Table IIc : The Subject Weightings applied to the Postgraduate Research Students for their portion of the State Block Grant are as follows:

Category Subject Weighting
A: High-cost laboratory and clinical subjects: 1.6
B: Intermediate cost subjects: 1.3
C: Other subjects: 1.0

For further details on the treatment of FTSEs to allocate income and costs to Schools, please refer to the Treasurer’ Office Explanatory Booklet on ARAM Outcomes, April 2005. Queries on the treatment of FTSE data in the ARAM should be directed to Mr Keith Creedon (creedonk@tcd.ie, ext 8581) in the Treasurer’s Office

  1. As noted above, this process was undertaken by Faculty Administrators under the former structure. Under new structures as of 2005-06 School Administrators will be responsible for calculating and returning FTSEs. In this description, all references to School Administrators apply to Faculty Admin istrators prior to 2005-06.
  2. The exceptions currently are In-Service Education courses, incoming SOCRATES students, BA Humanities (Distance Education) students, and students on the Trinity Access Programmes.
