Posted on: 21 February 2020

Trinity College Dublin won the Best Green Campus Award last night at The Education Awards 2020. Trinity was recognized as the top Irish college with an unsurpassed strong commitment to make a positive environmental impact and contribute to a sustainable future.

Trinity’s application outlined the coordinated work of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability and Low Carbon Living and the Green Campus Committee, highlighting some of the recent initiatives and advances made on the campus and by the Trinity Community, for example, the setting of sustainability targets in nine key areas and annual reporting on progress towards those targets, joining the International Sustainable Campus Network, building staff and student sustainability networks and raising awareness and engagement in sustainability education and work across the campus.

Professor Paula Murphy, Registrar, Trinity College Dublin accepted the award as co-Chair of the Provost’s Advisory Committee and Sustainability Champion, and on behalf of Michele Hallahan, Sustainability advisor, who unfortunately couldn’t be there to accept the award.

On presenting the award, the judging panel noted, in particular, the provision of sustainability guides and networking across the campus.

The annual Education Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate excellence in the third level education sector on the island of Ireland from both State and privately funded institutions.

This award is very special as Trinity is currently celebrating its 18th Green Week, making it the longest-running Green Week in Ireland. Launched by the Provost Dr Patrick Prendergast with guest speakers Senator David Norris and Green Party member Saoirse McHugh, the focus of Green Week this year is ‘Food and its impact on climate change’.
