Organic farming is currently going through a bad time with recent studies showing there to be no health or nutritional benefits over conventionally grown food. Also studies are now questioning just how polluting organic farming really is. Prof Nick Gray gives a brief overview of this crisis. Link

Septic tank registration Registration of household septic tanks and treatment systems is now well underway. As an incentive the normal registration fee of 50 euro will be set at 5 euro until 28 September 2012. Registration must be completed on or before 1 February 2013. Inspections of systems will start in six months time. Link

Dr Carlos Rocha is co-organizing and hosting the first Gordon Style conference to be held in Europe. The conference Land-Ocean Connectivity runs from the 25th to the 27th September in Brittany, France. The aim of this international interdisciplinary conference is to bring together geoscientists with expertise in coastal groundwater studies (e.g., physicists, chemists, geologists, hydrologists) with coastal ecologists and environmental economists, to discuss the state of knowledge and to design future experiments that will help advance the understanding of hydrological-ecological interaction in the coastal zone. Ball mill The Centre has recently purchased a new ball mill, funded from school funds. The Fritsch Planetary Micro Mill (Pulverisette 7 Classic Line) is applicable for quick dry or wet grinding of inorganic and organic samples for analysis, quality control and materials testing.It comes with grinding bowls in two types of material, zirconium oxide and sintered corundum. PhD student Martin Fryer and Professor Nick Gray of the Water Technology Research Group, based in the Centre for the Environment have published a new and precise method for estimating foam development in full scale aeration tanks in wastewater treatment plants. Foaming is a major problem in the operation of activated sludge treatment which is a biological process that treats 90% of wastewater in the developed world. The new methodology opens up the possibility of better foam prediction allowing more time for operators to prevent problematic foam occurring; as well as now being able to measure the effect of remedial action. The foaming Scum Index (FSI) has been presented in the latest issue of the Journal of Environmental Management. Link

Congratulations to Dr Theresa Hughes who has recently been confired with her PhD. Theresa worked with the Water Technology Research Group with Professor N.F. Gray, based in the Centre. Her study was entitled 'Acid mine drainage remediation by co-treatment with municipal wastewater using the activated sludge process.'

Applications to the Trinity College Dublin MSc course in Environmental Sciences has been extended to the end of July. This course has been running annually since 1980 and is one of the most successful courses of its kind. The latest edition of the textbook Water Technology: An introduction for Environmental Scientists and Engineers (740pp) written by Professor Nick Gray of the Centre for the Environment in the School of Natural Sciences has been released today. Co-published by Butterworth-Heinemann and IWA Publishing the new third edition has been extensively updated and expanded, and is supported by a dedicated website and blog. more information

Water at TCD is the new blog of Professor Nick Gray of the Centre for the Environment and who heads the Water Technology Research Group. He sees the blog as an open forum to share information, ideas or simply to ask questions about the broad area of water technology which covers all aspects of hydrobiology and water engineering. more information

Welcome to the Trinity Centre for the Environment

Originally established in 1979 as the Environmental Sciences Unit, the Trinity Centre for the Environment continues to encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary research and teaching in all aspects of the environment. The Centre is home to a number of research groups funded by a wide range of Local and State Agencies as well as the European Union. Centre staff also act as consultants for numerous state and semi-state bodies and private companies. A number of academic and research staff, including postgraduate students, are based in the Centre.

The Centre hosts the postgraduate MSc Environmental Science and MSc Biodiversity and Conservation courses. The School also offers an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences which is closely linked to the activities of the Centre.
